Cathryn began harp lessons at the age of eight years old. As a student, she traveled with her teacher and other students to perform for events in Chicago, Seattle, Australia, and Prague. She was among twenty young harpists who performed at the opening of the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. She was awarded third place in 1997 and first place in 1998 at the Utah State Fair Competition in Salt Lake City. She performed with and later helped direct the BYU Harp Ensemble for five years, and was the principal harpist for BYU's premier orchestra for two years. She was a finalist in a national college harp competition (the Anne Adams) in June 2004. She double majored in Comparative Literature and Harp Performance at Brigham Young University and graduated with Honors in 2006.
